Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Controller with a strong background in heavy civil construction accounting to oversee all financial operations for a growing, project-driven organization. This individual will play a critical role in managing job cost accounting, financial reporting, and ensuring accurate, timely insights into project performance.
The ideal candidate understands the complexities of long-cycle construction projects, including WIP reporting, cost tracking, and revenue recognition, and is comfortable operating in a fast-paced, field-integrated environment.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and financial reporting
Manage job cost accounting across multiple heavy civil projects (earthwork, utilities, infrastructure, site development, etc.)
Prepare and maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and support revenue recognition (percentage-of-completion)
Partner with project managers to monitor budgets, cost overruns, and profitability
Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
Develop and maintain cash flow forecasts tied to project timelines and billing cycles
Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal controls
Oversee audit processes and coordinate with external CPA firms
Implement and improve accounting systems, processes, and reporting structures
Provide financial insight to leadership for strategic decision-making
Qualifications
7+ years of accounting experience, with direct experience in heavy civil construction
Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting
Experience working with project managers and field teams on cost tracking and forecasting
Proficiency in construction accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint/Vista, Foundation, Sage 300/Timberline, or similar)
Advanced Excel skills (job cost analysis, forecasting, reporting)
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
CPA preferred but not required
Preferred Experience
Background supporting DOT, infrastructure, or large-scale site development projects
Experience managing accounting teams in a construction environment
Familiarity with equipment costing, depreciation, and utilization tracking
Experience improving or implementing accounting systems and workflows
